A paucity of Italian Series A football matches in March – down from five to three playing days – is the main cause for a 20.8% decline in sports betting in the Italian market during that month, says regulator AAMS.

The drop in revenues to 350.4 million Euros has cost the sector around 100 million Euros in football alone, the regulator concludes, noting that as much as 90% of Italian sports betting is on football.

Reuters reports that the March pay-out ratio rose to 74.3%, close to the historical average and better than the 69.7% recorded for February 2011, AAMS said.

The positive news was that in-play betting emulated the popularity experienced in other markets, growing by 13% year-on-year, with the punters wagering on over 200 different events.

Danish professional poker player, Gus Hansen (“The Great Dane”) has shown his appreciation for sport other than poker with a sponsorship of the Danish National Squash Team . Hansen is reportedly a big fan of the sport and other disciplines utilising a racket and a ball.

As the official sponsor of the team, the poker pro has made the team’s presence at the European Championships, to be held in Finland from 30 April to 4 May, a reality as the federation has been experiencing financial difficulties. Hansen will accompany the national team to Finland when they participate in the championships.
