PKR Poker: Affiliates Have Nothing to Fear

Posted under Casino News by admin on August 26, 2009 8:54 pm ||

PKR has said affiliates have "nothing to worry about" after not being able to log in to the PKR.com affiliate site or receive payments for more than a week.

Concerns were raised by affiliates this week, some of them due thousands of pounds from the poker site, after their PKR log in PKR has said affiliates have "nothing to worry about" after not being able to log in to the PKR.com affiliate site or receive payments for more than a week.

Concerns were raised by affiliates this week, some of them due thousands of pounds from the poker site, after their PKR log in details were rejected, leaving them unable to initiate payments or check their account statements.

However, speaking to EGRmagazine.com today, a spokesman for the poker site said: "The affiliate site is in the process of being updated and should be rectified very soon. No one has anything to woyry about when it comes to the financial element."

Speaking to EGRmagazine.com yesterday, one affiliate said: "The egaming industry has endured too many bad situations for affiliates, so I think it’s better to be safe than sorry.  It’s been a number of days, and I have money in the PKR kitty to collect, but haven’t been able to log on, so one can’t blame me in the slightest for starting to get concerned."

Affiliates sought reassurance after Linx Media Group, the company behind the Eurolinx, BetOnBet and Linx Casino brands and the BetonBet sportsbook, ceased trading this week, leaving affiliates and players owed account funds totaling thousands of pounds.

The Linx Media Group has ceased trading, leaving players and businesses owed account funds totalling thousands of pounds.

Linx Media is the company behind the Eurolinx, BetOnBet and Linx Casino brands and the BetonBet sportsbook.

A statement on the LinxMedia.com homepage states that Linx Media has "put its businesses into liquidation and will cease trading with immediate effect".

However the statement claimed that liquidators have not yet been appointed, saying only that it will "provide updates on the situation as and when information becomes available".

The statement continued: "All available player funds are held by these Eurolinx, BetOnBet and Linx Casino businesses. As soon as we have information on how to lodge claims with the liquidators, we will communicate this via www.eurolinx.com, www.BetOnBet.com and www.linxcasino.com."

Linx Media was owned by Jo Remme, who is understood to be a Norwegian also known as Jo Arild Remme. He is also alleged to have been involved in scams in Norway including a pyramid scheme with more than a thousand members, and a company called Arctic Uni that claimed to be able to provide sea urchin semen to breeders.

Eurolinx poker claimed to be licensed in Curacao, Linx Casino claimed to be licensed in Kahwanake and Betonbet claimed to be licensed in Malta.

However a statement on the Curacao Egaming Licensing Authority website in response to enquries reads "please note: we do not license www.eurolinx.com or www.betonbet.com".

Maltese regulator the Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LGA) issued a similar notice that stated "Eurolinx Ltd is not and has never been a licensed operator with the LGA [and] that the sportsbooks of Alpine Malta (BetonBet and Eurolinks) are not and never were licensed by the LGA".

Linx Media was part of the Microgaming network, and Microgaming said in a statement: "Micrograming has terminated its software licence agreements with the Linx Media Group, with immediate effect. It has been advised that the group companies are insolvent. Microgaming is presently gathering all facts relating to this matter and will provide further announcements as and when information becomes available."

Pokerati Blasts Card Player Magazine’s Jeff Shulman

Posted under Casino News by admin on August 22, 2009 4:12 am ||

A little background (or should we say "battleground"?):  Jeff Shulman is the President and COO of Card Player Magazine who just happens to have made the Final Nine Table of the 2009 World Series of Poker, which will be played out in November.  Shulman raised eyebrows after announcing he would "throw the bracelet in the garbage" should he win.  Most folks would agree Shulman probably won’t be throwing away the guaranteed million dollars plus he’s about to receive.

Shulman is angry with the World Series of Poker for dissolving its partnership arrangement with Card Player Magazine in favor of Bluff Magazine.  If Card Player still held the broadcasting rights to the WSOP, chances are pretty good Jeff Shulman wouldn’t be making the comments he has about that organization and its bracelet.

And Shulman continues to raise eye brows.  Cali Jen of Pokerati.com offered this observation:

As the Card Player Media President and COO, Shulman has the magazine at his disposal in which to write a lengthy explanation of what is so wrong with Harrah’s and how he could fix poker. Instead, though, a page in the September 1 issue is dedicated (as always) to the Card Player TV show entitled "The Scoop with Adam & Diego," and this time Shulman was the guest and excerpts were printed from the interview. Right off the bat, Diego Cordovez asked a question that baffled me coming from someone in the poker press:

"Now, the last couple of days, the poker press, what there is of it, has started to quote you and stir up controversy, which you initiated…"

Anyhooo, his answer? "…I’ve had a lot of people come up to me and say that somebody’s got to do something about it. I’m not sure I’m the right guy, being that I’m in the industry, but it’s not like we have some special relationship here. They hate us, for whatever reason… I think they hate anyone who’s not a celebrity, or maybe it’s just that they treat the celebrities so much better than everyone else that they have special rules, they don’t get penalties. I’ve never seen anything like it. If we really want to take poker to the next level, you can’t have different rules for different people."

Evidently, by disrespecting the WSOP bracelet and Harrah’s (and all the players who would do anything to be in his final table position), he plans to take poker to the next level. Would that be the rude and insulting level? Would that be the vague and evasive level? Would love to hear some thoughts on this issue…

Needless-to-say, Jeff Shulman being part of the 2009 World Series of Poker final table makes this year’s event that much more interesting.  Whether he actually does throw the bracelet away, that remains to be seen.  Such an action (or anticipation of this action) is likely to boost ratings for ESPN and the WSOP, so he won’t exactly be hurting them.

Two Tilts Highlight MLB Monday Slate

Two Tilts Highlight MLB Monday Slate

With only nine games on the baseball beat this Monday at Sportsbook.com, some games take on greater importance than others. Two games in particular standout for today, Detroit at Los Angeles Angels and the final game between San Francisco and Colorado. Here is a betting outlook at each conflict.

Tigers at Angels.

Detroit (65-58, -1.2 units) is three games clear in the loss column of Chicago, thanks to its efforts at home. The Tigers have had nothing to roar about with 25-38 road record, scoring just four runs per game, which is 25th in baseball. Detroit just lost a series to an appalling Oakland club and are now off to LA to face an Angels squad that loves to run. The Tigers are 3-14 in road games vs. good base-running teams averaging 0.85 or more stolen bases a game over the last three seasons.

Justin Verlander (13-7, 3.29 ERA) takes the mound against Angels, having 2.70 ERA in his last eight starts. The only knock on Verlander is an 0-2 record with a 4.55 ERA in five starts (Tigers 1-4) against the Angels.

The Halos (74-48, +24.1 units) are six games ahead of Texas in the AL West and will send their best pitcher to the mound in Jered Weaver (13-4, 3.89). Weaver’s been a little spotty in the second half of the season, but is coming off a complete game road shutout at Cleveland. Weaver is 5-1 in his last nine starts, with an ERA of 5.43, however that has gone somewhat unnoticed with Angels batters scoring 8.2 runs in that stretch. Weaver is 8-1 at the Big A this season) and his ERA is more than a full run lower at home.

Sportsbook.com has the Angels as -125 money line favorites with the total at 8.5, in part because how effective they have been at home against Detroit. L.A. has won eight of 10 and 27 of last 35 at home against the Tigers and are 15-5 having lost three of their last four games this season. The Angels are 10-2 OVER after seven or more consecutive road games and Verlander and the Tigers are 10-1 OVER playing on Monday’s.

The opening pitch is set for 7:05 Pacific with Detroit 17-36 in road games when playing against a team with a winning record.

Giants at Rockies

The Rockies (70-54, +13 units) turned a deficit into an advantage with one swing of the bat yesterday and are positioned to win three of four against their closest wild card competitor. Colorado’s Seth Smith homered a hanging changeup from Tim Lincecum, giving the Rockies the lead and they went on to win 4-2. Colorado is now three games ahead of San Francisco (67-57, +10.1 units) and would like to build on that lead before traveling to the Bay Area next week to play three at San Fran.

Colorado is 20-9 after a win by two runs or less and will send Jason Marquis (14-8, 3.58) to the mound trying to become the National League’s first 15-game winner. The Rocks will face a rejuvenated Barry Zito (8-11, 4.26), who has allowed three or less runs in his last seven starts. The left-hander has been victimized by an offense that has produced a league-low 2.9 runs for a regular starting pitcher.

The Rockies are -165 money line favorites with total Un9.5. Colorado is 16-4 (+14.6 Units) against the ML playing against a good team (Win Pct. 54% to 62%) this season and 21-12 OVER as a home favorite of -125 to -175. San Francisco is looking for the split and is 12-6 vs. a starting pitcher who throws more than 6.5 innings per start and Zito and the Giants are 13-3 UNDER in August games since 2007.

This NL West confrontation is 5:40 Pacific start.

Online Poker: Account Services Court Hearing Cancelled

Posted under Casino News by admin on August 16, 2009 9:32 pm ||

The scheduled Friday hearing in the Account Services Corp forfeiture suit (to reclaim $14 million in seized funds) has been canceled by the court, reportedly to give the court more time to review briefings on the matter, according to one of the attorneys connected to ASC.

Account Services is one of the payment processors connected to online poker companies Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars.  Funds were froze by the US Attorney out of the Southern District of New York in June following the issuance of sealed seizure warrants.

Account Services filed the suit to reclaim some of that money last month.  Douglas Rennick, who is connected to Account Services, has since been indicted.

Gambling911.com parent company, Costigan Media, has since successfully been granted access by a New York Circuit Court to redacted copies of the sealed search warrants and other pertinent court documents.  This week, the Honorable Judge Laura Taylor Swain allowed for additional information mentioning Account Services to be unredacted.

Gamblers and Liberty by Wayne Root: Review

Posted under Casino News by admin on August 12, 2009 2:58 am ||

In his new book, "The Conscience of a Libertarian: Empowering the Citizen Revolution with God, Guns, Gambling & Tax Cuts," Wayne Allyn Root asserts that America is a nation of gamblers and always has been.  Mr. Root, who was the 2008 Libertarian vice presidential nominee and who is now preparing to lead what he calls "a Ross Perot-like third party movement in 2012 for economic and personal freedom," discusses this in detail in Chapter 29: The End of Prohibition – Why Gamblers Will Empower the Citizen Revolution

Mr. Root starts the chapter by citing gambles that were taken in our nation’s early history.  The brave Pilgrims who took great risks in leaving Europe in search of liberty in the New World, the lotteries that helped fund colonial America, and the daring exploits of George Washington, John Adams and Benjamin Franklin – who risked their fortunes in the Revolutionary War for freedom – are just a few examples of the risk-taking, gambling heritage of the American people.

Gambling did not end with the founding of our great nation, either.  Immigrants with nothing but a strong will and unshakeable desire to succeed, entrepreneurs, and business owners all gambled that their dreams would come true, and they put all they had at risk to make it happen.  Americans are by nature risk-takers who are leaders and bold dreamers.  This willingness to gamble on success is an essential part of the character of America.

This risk-taking legacy lives on.  During the last decade, Internet poker and gambling were a global phenomenon.  Still, despite the worldwide appeal of online gaming, 70 percent of money wagered came from Americans – this notwithstanding the fact that the Justice Department asserted that the activity is unlawful.  Americans made 376 million trips to casinos in 2007, and there are now 185,000 places to buy a lottery ticket in America versus only 14,000 McDonald’s.  In fact, more money is spent on gambling in America than is spent on books, movies, videos, and DVDs combined.  The facts are clear – Americans enjoy a good gamble and are proud of it.

Mr. Root then discusses poker. Party Gaming reported $45 billion in wagering in 2005, for almost $1 billion in revenue.  Online poker was escalating in popularity when the Congress passed the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act.  This action outraged poker players.  Since passage of that act, over one million Americans joined the Poker Players Alliance to speak out and demand their right to play poker on the Internet.  Mr. Root believes the power of poker players is being harnessed by the Libertarian movement, as the 10 million to 12 million Americans who play online poker and the 50 million who play in person comprise a very formidable group.

Mr. Root notes that the proponents of a new Prohibition – a prohibition on online poker – are straight-laced, nanny state busy-bodies who are afraid to take risks.  They want to police what others do, this despite the fact that it does not affect them in any way.  He notes that there are people in the Middle East who think the same way – the Taliban.

Mr. Root wraps up the chapter by expressing his belief that the government will fail miserably in its attempts to stop online gambling.  The American people have tried online poker and gambling and they like it.  They want their freedom and are demanding it.  It makes far more sense to license, regulate, and tax online gaming than it does to try to enforce an unpopular prohibition.

The chapter is well-written, and Mr. Root does a fine job in explaining the phenomenon of gambling in American culture and how gambling and freedom are intertwined.  I personally believe government has attacked the very people – people who cherish freedom and liberty – who are most likely to take a strong stand.  In fact, poker players have taken a strong stand against the UIGEA and will continue to do so.  In my opinion, Mr. Root "gets it" in a way that few who have run for national office do.  I wholeheartedly recommend this chapter of the book.
