Online Poker Room Extends Genius Promotion – Online Casino News

Posted under Casino News by admin on July 19, 2009 1:41 am ||

Online poker site PartyPoker.com has extended its current Genius promotion over an additional five million hands offering players even more chances at winning some serious cash for just pennies.

The world’s second busiest online poker site, PartyPoker.com began its Genius promotion on July 6 offering to square the pot for every 50,000th hand that is played at the site’s cash tables for a minimum $100 jackpot up to a maximum $5,000 bonanza.

Initially set to run for ten million hands, the promotion has now been extended to 15 million hands with every player involved in the unique game receiving an equal share of the payout with the winner taking home the original pot.

As part of the promotion, PartyPoker.com stated that every millionth hand would have a guaranteed $10,000 prize pool while the final game will see $100,000 up for grabs.

As an example, the Genius promotion will pay $4,900 if a game has a pot standing at $70 and happens to be one of the lucky squared contests. That is $70 multiplied by $70 for a total $4,900 for each player. However, if the pot for a game stands at only eight dollars, then PartyPoker.com will kick in a bit more to take the jackpot up to $100, the minimum amount.

Russia removes poker from approved list of sports

Posted under Casino News by admin on July 18, 2009 7:22 pm ||

Hopes that the game of poker would escape the Russian ban on gambling in its major cities were dashed this week when the Russian Ministry of Youth, Sport and Tourism arbitrarily decreed July 20th that the game is no longer a sport. The order closes a valuable Russian law loophole for the game, which had previously been defined as a sport in the Federation.

Confirming the order, the Russian Youth, Sport and Tourism Minister Vitaly Mutko said: “We have made a change in the Russian list of sports, approved by the order of the Russian State physical training and sport committee on January 1, 2004. We have struck poker off the list.”

The decree throws poker back into the general gambling ban in Russia, confining its operation to only four remote designated areas where gambling establishments may be set up.

Mutko’s statement includes the view that poker was placed on the sports list without the the authority of the minister.

“The decision to include poker on the official list of sports should be taken by a special Ministry commission, and not by the head of the Russian State Physical Training and Sport Committee (which was the case with the classification of poker as a sport),” Mutko said. “What’s more, the decision should be registered by the Justice Ministry, and this was not done.”

The Russian about-turn on poker will likely dislocate the planned European Poker Tour stop scheduled for Moscow mid-August, although an official response to enquiries regarding this has not yet come through.

Operators wishing to offer legal poker under the new Russian gambling regime have serious obstacles to overcome, not least of which are the remoteness of the areas set aside for gambling, and the seriously undeveloped nature of those regions, which include Kaliningrad, the Primorsky region, the Altai region in Siberia and the cities of Krasnodar and Rostov.

Antiguan company Zookz exploits WTO ruling for profit

Posted under Casino News by admin on July 14, 2009 2:04 am ||

The respected publication Techdirt.com carried an interesting article about an online music provider apparently taking advantage of World Trade Organisation findings on the Internet gambling dispute between the United States and the government of Antigua and Barbuda.

The article provides background by recapping the story of how the tiny Caribbean online gambling jurisdiction fought a long-running WTO battle with the United States that culminated in the WTO ruling that the US had been out of line and discriminatory in its dealings with the Antiguans, who were consequently due some compensation.

Techdirt correctly observes that the after years of stonewalling and plain ignoring its obligations, the US was eventually placed in a position where, at the end of 2007, the WTO agreed to let Antigua ignore US intellectual property rights, but only to the tune of $21 million.

“Of course, the US quickly threatened Antigua not to go forward with any plans to violate US Intellectual Property, but did little to rectify the situation. So last year, Antigua insisted it really (really, really, really!) was going to start ignoring US IP,” Techdirt recalls, adding that the issue then seemed to quieten down.

Until now. Techdirt points to a story in the Los Angeles Times about a site called Zookz (from Carib Media), which claims to be taking advantage of the WTO ruling.

It is based in Antigua and is offering up unlimited music or movie downloads for a $10 a month subscription – or both music and movies for $18.

“Needless to say, the US government and the entertainment industry are vehemently opposed to Zookz interpretation of the WTO ruling – especially when it comes to the fact that the Zookz service is apparently available outside of Antigua,” comments Techdirt.

“Honestly, it seems like both sides are stretching the meaning of the ruling. The US and the entertainment industry basically want to completely ignore the WTO ruling, and interpret it to be entirely meaningless. That makes no sense, of course. The WTO wouldn’t allow such sanctions unless there were a way to actually make use of them.

“That said, it doesn’t seem like the WTO ruling gave random private companies carte blanche to offer up music and movies. In fact, the Zookz interpretation gets even odder, where it interprets the $21 million to mean how much it can make, rather than the value “lost” to the industry. In fact, because of this Zookz claims that if it gets too close to selling $21 million (or if others enter the market, and combined they approach $21 million), they’ll just have to start giving music and movies away for free to avoid going over the limit.

“While the WTO did want to give Antigua a weapon against the US, it’s hard to believe that was what it meant. So, while this may be amusing to watch, the likelihood of Zookz lasting very long seems slim, at best.”

2009 WSOP Eliminations: Jeff Lisandro Out

Posted under Casino News by admin on July 8, 2009 6:18 pm ||

There were a few notable 2009 World Series of Poker eliminations heading into Saturday morning.

Josh Arieh had been among the chip leaders just a few days ago and, oh how the mighty have fallen.  He busted out late Friday.

John Juanda has won nearly $4 million in career tournaments.  He too bid farewell to the 2009 World Series of Poker Friday.

Jason Somerville was listed among the top 10 notables leading early Friday and by the evening he was gone.

Lee Watkinson found himself out Friday as did the last of the Brunson clan, Pamela.

The real shocker: WSOP Player of the Year Jeff Lisandro has bitten the dust and is on his way out the door.   This occurred right after midnight.

Also a bit of a skirmish involving Phil Hellmuth.

Two players were tangled up in an all-in pot over at Table Hellmuth, pocket kings against pocket eights. The kings held up and the shorter of the two players doubled up. The dealer counted down the stacks and announced, "One hundred forty-three thousand, two hundred." Hellmuth was watching with a keen eye. "One forty-three one? Or one forty-three two?" he asked. "Two," said the dealer confidently. "Show it to me then," said Hellmuth. The dealer broke down the stacks again, and sure enough, Hellmuth was right. "People are gonna get paid the right amount when I’m at the table," he said to nobody in particular. Hellmuth is scowling and a bit grumpy right now. Better stick close by his table.

Super Slots
While other Vegas Technologies powered casinos were busy running Fourth of July tournaments, Super Slots continued with its Summer Slots Series. The online casinos is giving away thousands of dollars during the summer tournament.

The second part of the series started on July 1st, and will run through the beginning of August. The tournament in this month is being played on the Wheel of Chance game, a five reel slot.

To enter the Summer series, a player needs only to fork over $10. That will gain entry into the tournament where $50,000 can be won for first place, and various other finishes will also be paid by the casino.

“The Summer Slots Series looks to be the best tournament available at any online casino this summer,” said online player Wally Brinkman, “with the amount of people that have entered, it looks as though the odds are going to be good for players to cash in.”

The starting balance for anyone entering the tournament is $200. There is also an unlimited number of re-buys available for anyone that wants to gain a higher balance. The re-buy fee is $10, and that gets a player an additional $210 balance.
